What is Dengue Fever and Natural Home Remedies for Dengue Fever

According to the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention, about 400 million people are infected with dengue fever every year and there are an estimated 2.5 billion people in the world that are at risk of contracting dengue. Dengue fever is most common in Southeast Asia and the western Pacific islands, but the disease has been increasing rapidly in Latin America and the Caribbean. There are no direct medical treatments available to cure dengue but it is hoped that there are some effective remedies to relieve the symptoms of dengue fever. These include the use of pink guava juice, papaya leaves juice, neem leaves, fenugreek, basil leaves, orange juice, barley grass and drink plenty of water.

What is Dengue Fever?

Dengue fever is a viral infection spread by Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitos. When a mosquito bites a person infected with a dengue virus, the virus enters the mosquito and the infected mosquito then bites another person, the virus enters that person’s bloodstream. The Aedes aegypti mosquito lives in urban habitats and breeds mostly in man-made containers. Unlike other mosquitoes Ae. aegypti is a day-time feeder; its peak biting periods are early in the morning and in the evening before dusk. Female Ae. aegypti bites multiple people during each feeding period. Aedes eggs can remain dry for over a year in their breeding habitat and hatch when in contact with water.

Mild dengue fever causes a high fever, rash, and muscle and joint pain. A severe form of dengue fever, also called dengue hemorrhagic fever, can cause severe bleeding, a sudden drop in blood pressure (shock) and death.

Symptoms of Dengue Fever:

In a mild case of dengue fever, many people may experience no sign or symptoms of dengue fever. Most of the time symptoms occur four to seven days later after bitten by an infected mosquito.

Dengue fever causes a high fever — 104 F degrees — and at least two of the following symptoms:

  • Headache

  • Muscle, bone and joint pain

  • Nausea

  • Vomiting

  • Pain behind the eyes

  • Swollen glands

  • Rash

Most people recover within a week or so. In some cases, symptoms worsen and can become life-threatening. Blood vessels often become damaged and leaky. And the number of bloodstream platelets are dropping. This can cause a severe form of dengue fever, called dengue hemorrhagic fever, severe dengue or dengue shock syndrome.

Signs and symptoms of dengue hemorrhagic fever or severe dengue — a life-threatening emergency — include:

  • Severe abdominal pain

  • Persistent vomiting

  • Bleeding from your gums or nose

  • Blood in your urine, stools or vomit

  • Bleeding under the skin, which might look like bruising

  • Difficult or rapid breathing

  • Cold or clammy skin (shock)

  • Fatigue

  • Irritability or restlessness

Prevention:

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), we can take the following steps to prevent dengue:

  1. Preventing mosquitoes from accessing egg-laying habitats by environmental management and modification;

  2. Disposing of solid waste properly and removing artificial man-made habitats;

  3. Covering, emptying and cleaning of domestic water storage containers every week;

  4. Applying appropriate insecticides to water storage outdoor containers;

  5. Using of personal household protection measures, such as window screens, long-sleeved clothes, repellents, insecticide-treated materials, coils and vaporizers (These measures have to be observed during the day both at home and place of work since the mosquito bites during the day);

  6. Improving community participation and mobilization for sustained vector control;

  7. Applying insecticides as space spraying during outbreaks as one of the emergency vector-control measures;

  8. Active monitoring and surveillance of vectors should be carried out to determine the effectiveness of control interventions.

Natural Home Remedies for Dengue Fever:

Here are some home remedies that can fight against dengue fever,

1.Pink Guava Juice: Pink guava juice contains a good dose of vitamin C and iron and aids in repairing cells. Consuming pink guava juice is considered beneficial for getting relieved from dengue fever. This juice is considered helpful in cell wall strengthening. (1)

2.Papaya Leaves Juice: The leaves of papaya contain a few substances that are responsible for the production of platelets. The extract of papaya leaves is useful in getting relieved from dengue fever. It helps to increase blood platelets when consuming regularly. Consuming around 20ml of raw papaya leaves juice twice a day could help increase the platelets count in dengue patients. (2)

3.Neem Leaves: Neem leaves have amazing medicinal properties and help in getting relieved from dengue.  Steeping neem leaves and then drinking the subsequent brew has been shown to increase both blood platelet count and white blood cell count, two of the most dangerous side effects of the virus. Properly brewed neem leaves can improve the immune system and return your strength much faster than many other home remedies. (3)

4.Fenugreek: Consume a tea prepared using fenugreek seeds for getting relieved from dengue. To prepare it, add a half teaspoon of fenugreek seeds in a bowl of water and allow it to boil. Let it boil until the quantity gets reduced to half. Drink this tea around three times every day. This remedy works great in providing great relief from this illness. (4)

5. Basil leaves: Basil leaves also help in reducing the risks of dengue fever. The juice of basil leaves or the tea prepared by boiling tender basil leaves helps protect us from dengue fever. Basil leaves extract also help to reduce fever temperature. Basil essential oil acts as a natural mosquito repellant and hence it could be used as a protective strategy to stay away from dengue-causing mosquitoes. (5)

6.Orange Juice: The rich mixture of antioxidants and vitamins found in orange juice make it ideal for treating the secondary symptoms of dengue fever and eliminating the virus. Orange juice helps to promote antibodies of the immune system, increase urination and the release of toxins, and stimulates cellular repair due to vitamin C’s crucial role in the creation of collagen. (6)

7.Barley Grass: Barley grass can reduce the complications of dengue hemorrhagic fever. It has the unique ability to significantly increase the body’s blood platelet count by stimulating the production of more blood cells. (7)

8. Drink Plenty of Water: Dengue fever can cause severe dehydration which leads to other problems like headache and muscle cramps. Keeping the body hydrated by drinking lots of water during the day is a simple way of solving the problems. Furthermore, water will help to flush the body and eliminate excess toxins that can complicate the viral impact of the pathogen. (8)

What is Thyroid Problems And Their Symptoms?

Thyroid disorder can result from conditions that cause over-or under-function of the thyroid gland. When the gland produces too much thyroid hormone, the condition is known as hyperthyroidism. When the gland does not function sufficiently, there is too little thyroid hormone produced the condition is known as hypothyroidism. In addition to problems with the level of hormones made by the gland, both benign and malignant tumors (cancers) can cause enlargement of the thyroid gland or nodules (lumps) within the gland. Enlargement of the thyroid gland in the neck can cause symptoms that are directly related to the increase in the size of the organ such as difficulty swallowing and discomfort in front of the neck.

What is Thyroid?

The thyroid gland is a metabolism hormone-producing gland in the lower part of the neck, below Adam’s apple and it has a butterfly shape. It has two lobes attached by a middle part called the isthmus and is located in front of the trachea. The thyroid produces essential hormones required by the body that help regulate metabolism, heart rate, blood pressure, and temperature. Thyroid hormones are also necessary for children to grow and develop.

The thyroid uses iodine to produce vital hormones. Thyroxine, also known as T4, is the primary hormone produced by the gland. After delivery via the bloodstream to the body’s tissues, a small portion of the T4 released from the gland is converted to triiodothyronine (T3), which is the most active hormone.

What Are the Most Common Thyroid Problems And Their Symptoms?

There are two main types of thyroid problems, one is hypothyroidism and another is hyperthyroidism. Hypothyroidism is a more common type of thyroid problems. Most people with hypothyroidism are women, especially those who are of reproductive age or middle-aged. (1)

Hypothyroidism

In the case of hypothyroidism, the thyroid doesn’t produce enough of the thyroid hormones T3 or T4 (or both). According to the American Thyroid Association, in the United States by far the most common reason for hypothyroidism is a condition called Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, where the body mistakenly attacks the thyroid, thus compromising its functioning. Hashimoto’s takes place due to an autoimmune response, which interferes with the normal production of hormones. Causes of Hashimoto’s disease can include high amounts of stress, nutrient deficiencies, low immune function, and toxicity. (2)  However, on a worldwide level, an iodine deficiency in the diet is the number one cause of hypothyroidism.

The most common symptoms of hypothyroidism are: (3)

  • Persistent fatigue, lethargy, and sometimes depression or low motivation to exercise
  • Moodiness and sometimes anxiety
  • Intolerance to cold and frequently feeling chilly
  • Dry hair and skin — skin might feel cool to the touch and the toes/fingers might look a blue/purple color in some cases
  • Brain fog, trouble concentrating and forgetfulness
  • A hoarse voice
  • Unexplainable weight gain
  • Constipation, bloating and other digestive issues
  • Muscle weakness, sometimes aches or pains, and other discomforts

Hyperthyroidism

Hyperthyroidism, on the other hand, is when the body has too much of the needed thyroid hormones. According to the American Thyroid Association, the No. 1 cause of hyperthyroidism is Graves’ disease, but lumps on the thyroid or taking too much T4 in tablet form can also contribute to hyperthyroidism.

Symptoms of hyperthyroidism commonly include: (4)

According to the American Thyroid Association, common symptoms of hyperthyroidism can include:

  • an initial increase in energy
  • fatigue over time sweating
  • rapid pulse
  • tremors in the hands
  • anxiety
  • problems sleeping
  • thin skin
  • nervousness
  • irritability
  • fine and brittle hair
  • muscle weakness
  • frequent bowel movements
  • unintended weight loss
  • a light menstrual flow or fewer periods

Thyroid Problem Risk Factor:

Research shows that some of the most significant known risk factors for thyroid problems are,

  1. Deficiencies in three important nutrients which support healthy thyroid function– iodine, selenium, and zinc deficiency.
  2. Poor diet is high in processed foods with things like sugar or unhealthy fats. Too much caffeine and/or alcohol can also contribute to emotional stress and poor gut health.
  3. Emotional stress, anxiety, fatigue and depression: Mental stress can interfere with normal adrenal functioning wear down the entire immune system, kidneys, liver, and thyroid. (5)
  4. Reactions to some immunosuppressive medications. These may be used to manage other autoimmune disorders or even cancer.
  5. Genetic factors. Research shows that thyroid problems tend to run in families. (6)
  6. Pregnancy or other hormonal changes.
  7. Toxicity due to chemical exposure or contact with other environmental pollutants. (7)
  8. In the case of infants or young children, a genetic pituitary disorder, defective thyroid or lack of the gland entirely can sometimes be a cause. (8)
Top Natural Home Remedies for Gout

Gout is a type of arthritis that causes pain, swelling, tenderness, and inflammation in the joints. Gout is the result of excess uric acid in the body, a condition called hyperuricemia. Uric acid is a substance that normally forms when the body breaks down purines, which are found in human cells and in many foods.  Uric acid is transported by the blood to the kidneys and eliminated in the urine. However, some people either overproduce uric acid or they produce a normal amount, but their kidneys can’t process it efficiently and an excess of uric acid builds up. Some, but not all, of those people may develop gout.

Lifestyle factors, such as crash diets, drinking too much alcohol, eating large portions of certain foods high in purines (red meats or shellfish), dehydration (not getting enough fluids) and sweet sodas- also can contribute to the development of hyperuricemia and gout.

Here are some home remedies for gout relief which can reduce your pain and ease other symptoms.

Cherries: Cherry is an excellent home remedy for gout relief. A study published in Arthritis & Rheumatismevaluated 633 individuals with gout who were treated with cherry extract over a two-day period. This cherry treatment was associated with a 35 percent lower risk of gout attacks. When cherry intake was combined with allopurinol use, prescribed medication for gout and kidney stones, the risk of gout attacks was 75 percent lower. (1)

Celery: Celery or celery seed extract reduce inflammation and uric acid build up in the body. Researchers have identified over a dozen different types of antioxidants that are responsible for the benefits of celery — these include such phenolic acids as caffeic acid and ferulic acid, plus flavanols like quercetin. This makes celery useful for treating a wide range of conditions that are made worse by inflammation: joint pain, gout, liver and kidney infections. (2)

Ginger Root: Ginger root is often praised for its anti-inflammatory properties, and ginger has a multitude of uses in the prevention and treatment of gout. One study found topical ginger reduced pain related to uric acid in gout. Another study showed that in subjects with high levels of uric acid, their serum uric acid level was reduced by ginger. (3)

Water: If you’re suffering from gout pain and swelling, it is important to stay hydrated and drink lots of water. This will help to flush the uric acid out of your body, keeping gout under control. And soak the affected area in cold water can also relief from gout.

Activated charcoal: Activated charcoal is one of the potential home gout remedies for pain. Studies have shown that activated charcoal actually absorbs uric acid, making it harmless in the body. (4) You can take a charcoal bath three or four times a week or make a charcoal paste with a half cup of charcoal powder and water and apply it on the affected area.

Baking soda: Baking soda can reduce the amount of uric acid in the body, which is the main cause of gout, and relieve gout pain. The recommended dose is half a teaspoon in a glass of water and you can repeat this up to four times a day, but do not consume more than that amount.

Magnesium: One other remedy that’s been very beneficial in treating gout is magnesium. Magnesium is an alkaline mineral that can decrease uric acid formation in the body. Study shows that magnesium is an effective treatment for gout. (5) So we need to eat more magnesium rich food or magnesium supplement for the fight against gout.

Lemon Juice: The best way to relieve gout pain and swelling are to reduce the amount of uric acid in the bloodstream. Lemon juice is an ideal neutralizer for uric acid and also acts as an antioxidant, boosting the strength of joints and tissues to makes them less susceptible to uric acid accumulation. (6)

Apple: Apple contains malic acid which reduces uric acid in the body. Eating an apple every day, or drinking 2-3 glasses of apple juice each day can seriously reduce your chances of developing gout.

Studies show that many of the dietary items we consume lead to gout as well as other health problems. Changing your diet and lifestyle may be an easy solution to beating gout. One of the first things to do is to eliminate certain foods and beverages from your diet to beat gout.

  • Eliminate or reduce sugar intake
  • Eliminate grains
  • Limit alcohol consumption
  • Eliminate soda and diet soda
  • Eliminate caffeine
  • Exercise daily

If you want to get rid of gout naturally you should follow all the remedies we discuss here and eliminate certain foods and beverages from your diet. Pharmaceuticals also treat gout but there have dangerous side effects.
